Once again, the BET Awards made an incredible mark on people across the country. The festivities located in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater happened Sunday night. Jamie Foxx, comedian, actor, and film director was the host for this year’s Awards. The affair involved favorite hip-hop artists J Cole, Nicki Minaj, Migos, and R&B artists Ella Mai, H.E.R, and Daniel Ceaser. The 2018 BET Awards had some picture-capturing moments that viewers won’t ever forget.
Meek Millz performed his new single “Stay Woke” featuring Miguel and caught the eyes of America for his fight concerning prison reform. The hip-hop artist wore a black hoodie with the image of XXXTentacion, and Jimmy Wopo, both of whom died last week due to gun violence, he rapped about the issues of police brutality and mass incarceration. The eye-opening performance had actors on the stage of children playing, and then actors dressed in police uniform shot a young boy placing the American flag over his body after you hear the crying of a grieving mother.
A tribute to Anita Baker is a moment from the BET Awards the audience couldn’t resist. The singers Jamie Foxx, Ledisi, Yolanda Adams, and Marsha Ambrosius honored the eight-time Grammy Award-winning artist Anita Baker for her contribution in the music industry. Baker has changed many lives with her 80’s tune Caught in the Rapture, and the R&B single Sweet Love. Shortly following the honorary performances, Baker accepted the Life Time Achievement Award after delivering a silver-tongued speech.
Foxx is known for his creativity as a comedian as well as his breathtaking talent as a pianist. The comedian kept the audience entertained with his improvisation. While it was unknown Foxx announced Childish Gambino known as Donald Glover to the stage for his single “This is America.” The moment was so random that it threw Glover off guard, but he embraced Foxx’s energy on stage singing lyrics of Glover’s single.
While no one knew that he was performing his hit song “Friends” off of his latest album KOD, viewers grew excited seeing J Cole on stage. The surprise feeling made the audience stand up while J Cole sends chills up some spines with his truth-telling lyrics. Daniel Ceaser sang on the hook backing up J Cole while he describes substance abuse and police brutality. The mesmerizing artist includes children on stage mediating before dancing impressing the audience with his presentation.
The 2018 BET Awards produced an overall great show with a lot of performers who get the audience going. Jamie Foxx was a phenomenal host for the awards ceremony he is entertaining and talented. Recognizing Anita Baker during the awards was tear-jerking because she has committed her whole life to music. The best moment was the surprise performance done by J Cole he is the truth during these trying times in America.
