Although the word “superfood” gets thrown around a lot, some foods are superior as they are packed full of essential nutrients. Their impact on our health can be so profound that it’s recommended to incorporate them in what we eat everyday. Since not all foods are created equal, here are the 5 superfood that give the best nutrition.

  1. Dark Leafy Greens

Kale, spinach, turnip greens, and similar vegetables are chock full of folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, and fiber as well as other important nutrients. In addition to being rich sources of essential nutrients, they have also been linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Another reason to consider them a great choice is that they contain carotenoids. These are anti-inflammatory compounds which help prevent against certain types of cancer.

  1. Hemp

Hemp hearts have been getting a great deal of attention lately as they are rich in minerals, healthy fats, and protein. What makes hemp hearts an exceptional seed is that they are a vegan source of all nine essential amino acids making it a complete protein. They’re also rich in zinc, iron, and magnesium as well as being high in fiber.

  1. Tomatoes

One of our favorite vegetables is not only delicious, but it also contributes to our longevity. Tomatoes are a versatile food that can be used in a variety of dishes. From cooked in tomato sauces for pasta to raw and diced for salads. They’re chock full of vitamins and antioxidants and a compound called lycopene which has been shown to fight cancer.

  1. Fish

Most fish are considered a superfood but the best choice is fatty fish such as salmon. Besides being a lean protein, they contain omega-3 fatty acids which contribute to heart health. Countries that consume a higher amount of fish find that their rates of heart disease are lower on average.

Make sure you are not getting too much mercury from consuming fish by limiting your consumption to three servings a week and know where the fish has come from. For salmon, it’s best to eat wild caught salmon from Alaska or the Pacific Northwest.

  1. Yogurt

In recent years, a healthy gut become a strong focus of the wellness community and for good reason. Digestion problems can lead to constipation, exhaustion, and even mental health issues. Yogurt rich in probiotics, the live beneficial bacteria our guts need to stay healthy, is smart way to keep our tummies happy.

Although yogurt is considered a superfood, they are not all created equal. The high sugar content yogurts actually counteract the benefits of consuming probiotics. To get the best source possible, buy plain yogurt with live active cultures and add your own fruit.

These five superfoods provide a variety of health and wellness benefits. To get the most from all diet, make sure that to include at least one of these foods per meal. When we consume superfoods, our bodies get the nutrition necessary for optimal health.
