STEPHANIE HART: Chicago’s New Dessert Queen
Get ready, Chicago! Be on the lookout for the sweet marriage of Brown Sugar Bakery and Cupid Candies.
Stephanie Hart, owner of the popular 16-year old Brown Sugar Bakery brand in Chicago is in the final stages of acquiring another iconic sweet institution, 84-year old Cupid Candies. The purchase will include the building, along with the equipment, and Ms. Hart presently plans to retain all of Cupid’s 23 employees. She told us that she had been eyeing Cupid Candies as an acquisition for a little over a year. The manufacturing and shipping of Brown Sugar Bakery’s signature cakes will take place at the Cupid Candies location, and the Chatham Brown Sugar Bakery location will be a retail outlet only, mimicking her Austin and Navy Pier locations. Stephanie was able to raise the capital for the Cupid Candies acquisition by securing a loan from a community lending institution, in combination with being awarded a $500,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
Ms. Hart’s short-term goal for Cupid Candies is to secure all recipes and processes, ensuring that the Cupid brand remain consistent with current taste and quality. And, her mid-term goal is to further develop Cupid brand’s various retail outlets, expanding its presence and customer base. Stephanie feels it is necessary for small business to hire people from within the community it serves. She explained to us, “You want people in that community to benefit from the income of the business in as many ways as possible. So, you certainly want to hire from within that community. It is the proper thing to do.”
Kudos to Stephanie Hart for her business acumen and her commitment to helping the community benefit from the success of small business. We wish her well with her current business venture and all future endeavors, as well.
