Chicago is one of those cities where most people don’t own a car. Food delivery services makes things easier and sometimes, cheaper, not having to worry about ordering an Uber, Lyft, take the train, bus, etc. to go somewhere and get food. There are quite a few options to choose from, but here is a comparison of the most popular ones in Chicago.

Uber Eats

Everyone in Chicago and every other big city has heard of and used Uber to get from point A to point B. Uber also offers a delivery service for food. Uber Eats is its own app aside from the original Uber app, and has been around only a few years, but has been successful thus far. If you want to work for this delivery service, you are able to do so with a car, bike, or even scooter which makes it easier for people who cannot afford a car to make some extra cash. Uber Eats partners with certain restaurants to help with food delivery to its customers so it not only helps the people ordering the food, but the restaurant business as well. They charge a booking fee of about five dollars per order, depending on how far away the restaurant is to your address, usually taking about 20-40 minutes to get delivered, which is normal for any delivery service. Ordering food is as easy as entering your delivery address and viewing which restaurants can be delivered through Uber Eats to your doorstep based on your proximity.

Postmates

Postmates is a food delivery service that has been around since 2011 and is usually only available in large cities. Most Postmates employees get around by bike or sometimes car. They are able to get orders from many different restaurants from all around the city, and even grocery stores like Jewel-Osco. Delivery is usually less than five dollars and the service is great. You can get the Postmates app on your phone, hook up your credit card number, and order whenever you please. Type in your address and see which restaurants are near you. Delivery prices depend on how close you are to the store or restaurant, and things like rush hour also play a role in the price. There is a section in the app that shows all the places you can get food for only a $1.99 delivery charge. There is also sometimes an option to get free delivery if you spend a certain amount on food as well – typically if it is over $30 or $40. Also, Postmates often has free delivery days when there is a holiday or a big event going on, such as the Super Bowl. This is helpful because most people won’t want to leave their house on a holiday or during an event on TV, having these promos only helps the business and makes it easier for the customers as well. If you want to join Postmates Plus, you can pay $9.99 each month to enjoy free delivery and no service fees on all orders over $20, and be able to choose from over 4,000 merchants. Spending the extra money for Postmates Plus might be a smart thing to do if you like to order food often from various restaurants.

Peapod

Peapod is a delivery service that brings your groceries to your doorstep, whether it is food, toiletries, pet food – anything you could get at the grocery store. This is run by a business that provides trucks to store all the food, keeping your groceries chilled so they do not get spoiled, instead of having bikers or drivers in cars. It is an easy way to save money, and helps get rid of any possible temptations everyone gets at the grocery store, such as throwing unnecessary food in your cart. The company originated in Chicago in 1989. Since they have been around for such a long time, you know they are trustworthy. Through Peapod, you are specifically typing in the search bar what food you want and you know the total price before checking out, which is helpful if you are on a tight budget. Delivery can be free if you have a code, otherwise it is only about five dollars. The nice thing about Peapod is that you can pick which day and time you would want your food delivered to you based on the convenience of your schedule. This way, they only deliver it to you when you know you will be home. This is a great option if you want to avoid spending money on snacks or unhealthy items, or if you have a busy week. You can pick exactly what you want and not be tempted by seeing the snacks down the isles at the grocery store.
