On July 7, 2018, Chicago held a protest that the city has never witnessed before. The Reverend Dr. Michael Louis Pfleger, Senior Pastor, of the Faith Community of Saint Sabina lead a historical march this past Saturday on the Dan Ryan Expressway for peace and an end to gun violence. Hundreds of people joined the protest to send a message to the government. The protest formulates an expression of Chicago being fed up with waiting for government assistance and demanding solutions for the betterment of the urban communities.
Governor Bruce Rauner said he respects the rights of thousands of anti-violence protesters who blocked traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway but called it dangerous and wrong to authorize protest on an interstate expressway. The Governor’s statement started a controversy Twitter battle with Father Pfleger.
The Governor misuses his compassion for the people living in these communities. In 2016, twenty-five participators and supporters took a risk to protest the closing of Chicago State University. “I don’t want to dwell on the negative,” he said. Chicagoans much rather hear a governor that is transparent on what is moral and immoral. Instead, the governor created a Twitter argument misinterpreting Pfleger’s request to shut down the entire expressway. Rauner lied about his conversation with Pfleger.
Instead of Rauner supporting many grieving mothers, fathers, and children who have lost loved ones due to homicides, and the police brutality he misunderstood the affirmative action behind the protest. “One of the goals of the protest implied the government is failing to act,” said the Governor. Chicagoans can admit that Rauner is doing a mediocre job with holding himself accountable for his record of failures. “Desperate and hypocritical attack from a failed governor who appealed his own property assessments 22 times”, said Pritzker spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Bruce Rauner proposed a budget that would’ve sent property taxes skyrocketing and instead of focusing on solutions he’s busy trying to distract from his record of failure”, she said.
Rauner is threatened by the power of Father Pfleger due to his ability to stand with people whose voice matters. Community members support Pfleger designing the protest to focus on crime, joblessness, and poverty. Father Pfleger is more of a governor to the people residing in urban communities than Rauner will ever be.
Ultimately, Father Pfleger imitates Dr. Martin Luther Jr. of the 21st century. He has boldly committed himself to give hope to those that lost loved ones due to gun violence in the city. Due to past protest, Governor Rauner continues to share his negative opinions seamlessly. As a governor, he needs to encourage Chicagoans to exercise their freedom to march instead of restricting them from doing so.
