Chicken and Waffles is such a classic brunch dish that almost everyone loves. The savoriness of the fried chicken and the sweetness of the waffle and maple syrup really make the dish a star. I’m someone who loves a sweet and savory combo. When I have something sugary, I usually need something salty right after to balance it out, so chicken and waffles is the ideal dish for me. Chicken and waffles seems to be on every menu these days, but each restaurant has their own variation of it. The first time I tried chicken and waffles, it wasn’t a hit. I won’t say where I went, but I was unimpressed. I received a rubbery waffle and a cold chicken tender on top. Ever since then, I make sure to look up the restaurant’s variation of the dish before going. What I look for in chicken and waffles is:
- A waffle that has crispy edges, yet is soft in the middle.
- Fried chicken ( preferably bone-in), seasoned perfectly, juicy, and crispy and crunchy.
- Topped with a good wad of butter and hot maple syrup
My first stop for some delicious chicken and waffles may sound familiar because I’ve reviewed it before. Luella’s Southern Kitchen is located at 4609 N Lincoln Ave. The chicken and waffles here are done the RIGHT way. Having had to share mine last time, this time, it was all for me. The waffle is browned, yet fluffy. The Nashville hot chicken is the star of the dish. Don’t get me wrong, the whole dish is a star, but the chicken is fantastic. It’s seasoned with the perfect amount of spice, the skin is crunchy and salty in a good way, and the butter and syrup are really the cherry on top. Every single ingredient compliments one another. The food there is always fresh and prepared with love. Luella’s chicken and waffles are hands down my number one pick.
My next pick for chicken and waffles is Daley’s Restaurant. They’re located at 809 E 63rd St in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Daley’s Restaurant debuted in 1892 and is the city’s oldest restaurant. It truly is an iconic staple here in Chicago. I’ve been here 3 times before, and I can say that each time I go there, I get their chicken and waffles. I’m someone who likes to switch it up and try something new, but the chicken and waffles is so good that I can’t order anything else. The portion size here is out of this world. The brown and crispy Belgian waffles are topped with the tastiest fried chicken wings you’ll ever taste. They’re marinated in their homemade hot sauce and have the perfect amount of heat. They are crispy and crunchy and seasoned to perfection. They give you a good amount of butter and syrup to pile on. Daley’s does chicken and waffles the right way. Maybe the chicken and waffles is the reason they’ve been open for 126 years? Daley’s serves some of the best soul food, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you’ve never been here before, the chicken and waffles are a must!
