What is it you most dislike? Stupidity, especially in its nastiest forms of racism and superstition.
As you grow older, you’ll see some men cheat other men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a man does that to another man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that man is trash. Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong. Ignorance and prejudice are the handmaidens of propaganda. Our mission, therefore, is to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism can, will, and must be defeated.
No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them. I wish I could say that racism and prejudice were only distant memories. We must dissent from the indifference. We must dissent from the apathy. We must dissent from the fear, the hatred and the mistrust…We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better. The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it. The white man’s happiness cannot be purchased by the black man’s misery.
Racism is not merely a simplistic hatred. It is, more often, broad sympathy toward some and broader skepticism toward others. Racism does not have a good track record. It’s been tried out for a long time and you’d think by now we’d want to put an end to it instead of putting it under new management. The blind faith in some half-assed conspiracy theories lines up with the logic of having to believe in something with no questions asked. It gives us peace and comfort. As simple as I was, I found that resorting to this absolute nonsense was the root of all our problems. It was a road of willingly-learned helplessness, for no action could make a difference, thereby no action was needed I’d have wasted a lot of time and trouble before I learned that the best way to take all people, black or white, Asian or Hispanic, is to take them for what they think they are, then leave them alone.
Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal. Never judge someone’s character based on the words of another. Instead, study the motives behind the words of the person casting the bad judgment. White privilege is an absence of the consequences of racism. An absence of structural discrimination, an absence of your race being viewed as a problem first and foremost. People who insist on dividing the world into ‘Us’ and ‘Them’ never contemplate that they may be someone else’s ‘Them. Racism is so universal in this country, so widespread, and deep-seated, that it is invisible because it is so normal.
I always looked upon the acts of racist exclusion, or insult, as pitiable, for the other person. I never absorbed that. I always thought that there was something deficient about such people. Staying silent is like a slow growing cancer to the soul and a trait of a true coward. There is nothing intelligent about not standing up for yourself. You may not win every battle. However, everyone will at least know what you stood for you. To cheapen the lives of any group of men, cheapens the lives of all men, even our own. This is a law of human psychology, or human nature. And it will not be repealed by our wishes, nor will it be merciful to our blindness. Three hundred years of humiliation, abuse and deprivation cannot be expected to find voice in a whisper.
I say all of this as a result of my experience Friday by a manager Carlos Ortiz who initially told me it was his bar and to get the hell out of here nigger quote, I will take care of your tab nigger but don’t ever come back end quote. He then goes to another manager of the bar i was a little bit insulted by Carlos Ortiz he lied to the other manager as a result of his lies I dropped the F Bomb and the other then said I had to leave because I used profanity towards the manager Carlos Ortiz. I am in no way saying don’t go to the bar I am saying if you do go there Steer clear of Carlos Ortiz. I myself will never step foot in the establishment as long Carlos Ortiz is affiliated and employed.Prior to this day a bar had frequented I have gotten nothing but top notch treatment.
