Rabab Abdalla The CEO and Founder of brand management company Runway Prestige presented the debut season of Maarkah NYFW September 11th 2017, which was part of the official NYFW calender of Fashion Week Online. Rabab’s inspiration in presenting the show was to spotlight the beauty of her culture and create a broader platform for designers from the Middle East, Africa and beyond which would unite its audience and reflect diversity. The evening assembled together breath taking international fashion in the audience and on the runway. The audience was full of a cross section of dignitaries from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Malaysia, as well as Representatives from Fashion Ave News and Billie Blunt Magazine. Former plus sized super model and fashion industry icon Catherine Schuller was in attendance as well as Grammy nominated ‘Fame” composer William Goldstein. Maarhak NYFW was presented in a minimalist all white studio which almost appeared to glow as the fashion came down the runway. I was so excited to attend and this show was more beautiful than you could imagine. Many of the collections presented by the Middle Eastern designers were accented with jewel and sequined embroidery, lots of shimmer and sparkle, crowns and dazzling jewelry, with metallic and soft pastel and jewel tone color palettes. The African designers presented collections with bold and rich color palettes. It was sensational to see so much vibrant color coming down the runway. All of the collections specifically the Middle Eastern collections were very accessible to all body types in their style. I literally could see myself wearing every piece that came down the runway. All of the musical selected to the pair with the collections complimented the culture of each presenting collection.

The showcasing designers included:
Aswad Albassi -USA
Houda el Fechka Eddouane- Holland
Issam Balalioui- South Africa
Jaques LaGrange – South Africa
Khaoula Ouilal- Morocco
Kaoutar Chaoul- Belgium
Margaret Persaud- Guyana
Michal Hidas- Israel
Oula Oussi- Syria
Siham El Habti- Morocco

I had the opportunity to speak with Moroccan designer Khaoula and to see one of her sensational gowns up close before the show. Khaoula shared that jewel embellishment, gold, sequins, and long flowing gowns are key elements of Moroccan fashion. Her collection was my favorite, and each of the models were outfitted in beautiful gowns accessorized with jeweled crowns. One of her show stopping gowns featured jewel covered bodice which brought the audience to cheers and applause. I also had the opportunity . I also had the opportunity to speak with Malayasian fashion designer Mimi Wahedah who was in attendance with Malaysian delegates. Wahedah designs a collection of hijabs that she fastens with rubber bands instead of the traditional pins. Wahedeah created the rubber band trend in hijabs because she did not like that pins damage the fabric and and is also a safety hazard. Wahedeah said that her fashions follow modest Malaysian culture while be modern. For someone who loves fashion such as myself, it was an evening that thrilled all of your senses. I was very proud to be a media partner and it was a very enriching evening. I can not wait ill next season.
