Healthy living is more than talk in Kristen Brogan Johnson’s world. She learned the hard way as a teenager about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Her mom and dad stoked the fire, but ultimately she had to learn for herself to be conscious of what to eat, how to move and why being mindful of one’s health is crucial to better living. Now she is a leader in the field, as an author, instructor, chef, muse and global entrepreneur extraordinaire. Here is her story.
Kristen Brogan Johnson is a Registered Dietitian, Yoga Instructor, Superfood Chef, Author of the best- seller cookbook, Target to Table: Healthy & Delicious Meals One Superfood at A Time and Mindful Living Expert at On Target Living, a health and performance company teaching people how to be their best self. Kristen began her career in the retail world working as a corporate dietitian and fitness expert for one of the largest retailers in the Midwest. Wanting a more natural approach to eating, Kristen became the first holistic dietitian for an East coast based natural food market chain in Chicago. In this retail setting, Kristen learned all about the world of food, holistic health and shoppers’ behaviors allowing her to uncover the secrets to living a healthier and happier life.
Kristen graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics and Exercise Science and completed her dietetic internship at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital through Andrews University. She holds certifications from the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Council on Exercise, Yoga Alliance and ServeSafe. She is a member of the Illinois Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Professional Women’s Club of Chicago, and The National Association of Women Business Owners. Kristen serves on the board of directors at the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce and is Vice-Chair of Membership. Kristen lives in Bucktown, Chicago with her husband, Sean and spends her free-time exploring the Chicago food scene, completing sprint triathlons, doing yoga, and riding on her scooter.
Kristen’s healthy living approach is centered on teaching a lifestyle that blends mindful eating, mindful moving, and mindful living. Her presentation style has been described as sweet and powerful.
As I young girl I grew up eating flaxseeds, wheatgrass, hemp seed bread, and many other “superfoods” from the influence of my health enthusiast father—now founder and CEO of a global health and performance company, On Target Living.
This health- focused lifestyle started when my Dad became a personal trainer at one of the largest Athletic Clubs in the country when I was 6 years old. Aka: The MAC. I remember feeling like The MAC was my own personal jungle gym. I would jump from one activity to the next—basketball, swimming, tennis, hot tubbin’, and “weight lifting” until there was a rule put in place that children under 13 years of age were not allowed to use the weight room. Rule probably enforced because of me… .boo!
I usually finished my days by ordering a giant plate of pickles at The MAC restaurant. You could say it was the “icing on the cake” to my days of fitness- filled adventures. Yes, weird I know but cucumbers were my favorite snack as a kid. And my favorite candy? Black licorice. I like to say I was born to live the healthy life!
Our family vacations always included some form of exercise whether it was hiking the sand dunes in Northern Michigan, skiing out west, taking yoga pose pictures in front of our favorite sites, or swimming in our backyard pool. You know, the typical family lifestyle…right?
Once I got older and started going over to friend’s houses more I realized that my lifestyle wasn’t so normal after all—it was actually the complete opposite of normal—weird, strange, freaky, and not so cool–and that’s when my life turned upside- down. I turned into a teenager with attitude and a rebel with a cause!
I suddenly felt like I had been missing out on all of the “good stuff.” You know, like chips, soda, and cookies. And at my age, all I wanted to do was fit in and be hip and cool. I was sick of bringing hummus and cucumbers to school when all of my friends had Doritos or Oatmeal Cream Pies. Yes, the good stuff! “Dad, why can’t we eat like normal people? Why do you have to be such a freak?” (Luckily, we can joke about this now, but at the time it wasn’t so funny).
And that’s when I decided to do everything opposite of what my Dad practiced and preached. This sweet and innocent young girl suddenly turned into a junk- food-eating teenager. I started to go out to fast-food with friends and even got a job at Johnny Rockets Burger Restaurant where I had access to unlimited burgers and milkshakes. Oh boy was it the life… or so I thought.
10 pounds later…I was diagnosed with asthma and put on an inhaler. At the time, I was a track athlete in High School, running the 400-meter sprint and began to run the worst times of my life. I did not like the way I looked or felt and longed for my old “feel good” lifestyle. I realized I had to do something about my new way of living and immediately resorted back to my old childhood ways of eating “superfoods” and making movement part of my everyday life.
I even learned how to take the super healthy foods I grew up eating and turn them delicious dishes I now love–all thanks to the days spent in the kitchen with my Mom, a Lebanese girl with a love for cooking.
“Looking back, my Mom is truly the one that changed my life and taught me that it’s the story of food that is so powerful. She made me realize that there is so much more to eating than to lose weight or be healthy. Food is an experience and it’s meant to be enjoyed in every way.
I ending up losing the 10 pounds plus some effortlessly and my asthma magically disappeared. I got off my inhaler, started running the best times of my life and never looked back. I also realized that my Dad really wasn’t a “freak” after all and that my childhood lifestyle should be the normal, cool way to live. Don’t you think?
The reason I became a Dietitian is because I wanted to show people that you don’t have to live on the extreme side of anything or give up the things that make you happy. You can actually “have your cake and eat it too” and live a healthy lifestyle that is fun and flavorful.

I decided to join forces with my Dad, Mom, twin brother, and an amazing team in an effort to share this message with the world. Now as a keynote speaker, mindfulness expert, and Chief Nutrition Officer at On Target Living, I teach people how to live a healthy lifestyle that blends healthy eating, mindful movement, and the things that make you happy. It’s a lifestyle where you really can have it all.
Workshops range from 60-90 minutes and can be tailored to meet your needs and group size.
