BLEXIT is a new and controversial political movement that is meant to have people release themselves from political orthodoxy, according to the BLEXIT website. This means BLEXIT supports black people who are not democrats, and the movement is trying to fight against the notion that black people should be democrats. BLEXIT stands for “black exit.”
BLEXIT has been spearheaded by Candace Owens, who is a black conservative commentator and a Trump supporter. She has made controversial statements, such as “we can accept the left’s narrative that we (African Americans) are not American…and are permanent victims.” She said this during the Turning Point USA’s Young Black Leadership Summit in Washington D.C. on Monday.
BLEXIT recently has released merchandise, such as hats and t-shirts that can be bought on the BLEXIT website. Owens original claimed that these products were made by Kanye West in a tweet, saying “Blexit is a renaissance and I am blessed to say that this logo, these colors, were created by my dear friend and fellow superhero Kanye West,” on October 29th.
Kanye West denies that he had created the BLEXIT merchandise that is currently being sold on the BLEXIT website. In a tweet, West said that he introduced Owens to the person who actually made the merchandise and West said that Owens used his name, since the actual designer was not comfortable with their name being associated with the merchandise.
Owens later retracted her statement about West creating the logo and colors, she clarified that West only introduced the actual designer to Owens. Owens then claimed that the news media is trying connect West to BLEXIT merchandise in order to get more “website clicks”.
West said on twitter, “I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in” and that he will be distancing himself from politics. West did not specify what messages he is being used for, but he tweeted this after the controversy surrounding the BLEXIT clothing line and his White House meeting with President Trump.
Owens also said in her clarification statement that West is not associated at all with her movement. Owens released a full statement which she titled 808s and Heartbreak, sharing its name with a West album, on October 31st about West’s affiliation with BLEXIT in which she apologized to West and the Trump administration. Owens said she never wanted to make West feel used. She explained her superhero comment by saying that West helped her through her childhood and changed her life and that is why she called him a superhero. She apologized to the Trump administration because “I know that Kanye’s tweets were rapidly misinterpreted as a shot to this administration.” Owens claims that West’s tweets about leaving politics were solely about his perceived involvement in the BLEXIT movement.
So it seems that, based the various statements and tweets from Owens and West, Owens name-dropped West during a speech and implied he was a part of the design team for BLEXIT merchandise. In actuality, West just put Owens in contact with a designer and had no further affiliation with the BLEXIT movement. Kanye West doesn’t have anything to do with BLEXIT, and the connection between the two was implied by Owens and then later shut down by her as well.
