The Fall season is finally here, but here in Chicago, the weather does it’s own weird thing. This past week, I’ve seen the weather go from 85 degrees to a high of 40 degrees. I had to take my winter coat out a little too early. Next week it’ll be in the mid to upper 50s and that’s my type of weather. For those cold and chilly days ahead of us, I plan to warm up with some good comfort food. Comfort food to me is, Mac and cheese, Pot Roast, Chili, Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes,  stews, and a whole lot more. Despite all that food being delicious, It gives you a warm and comfy feeling inside. This past week with the 40 degree day we had, all I wanted to do was stay home. My friends and I decided we needed to try a new place. We all agreed we just want some comfort food. With a little quick research and everyone agreeing on a place, we decided to drive to the Ravenswood neighborhood and try Luella’s Southern Kitchen.

Luella’s Southern Kitchen is located at 4609 N Lincoln Ave in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. My friends and I agreed that since it was our first time here, we would share our food with one another. We ordered the shrimp and grits, fried chicken, cornbread, brisket mac and cheese, and beignets.  I don’t know where to begin. The shrimp and grits were cheesy, creamy, and the shrimp was spiced to perfection. That was the dish that was wiped out the quickest. The buttermilk fried chicken was crispy, crunchy, seasoned the right way, and juicy. It’s everything you would want your fried chicken to taste like. If there is one thing that has me wishing I lived closer to this place, It would be the skillet cornbread and honey. It was so warm, sweet, buttery, and baked to perfection. The brisket mac and cheese was delicious. I’ve never tried both brisket and mac and cheese together, but it was heavenly. I know next time that I definitely don’t want to share this dish with anyone. I do have to say it was very rich and filling.

With little to no room for dessert, we decided It would be wrong if we didn’t grab any dessert. We decided to take some beignets to go. Having never tried one, I’ve always imagined it to be light and fluffy. It was exactly that and more! The quality of the food was superb and the prices are well worth it. The crew was helpful with recommending certain dishes since we really didn’t know what to expect. It was quite crowded but that always is a sign that the food is good. If you haven’t already, try Luella’s. The food is delicious and comforting. You will leave full and happy!
