Regardless of ethnicity, age, or socioeconomic status, the top factor in Chicago summer style choices seems to be comfort. Chicagoans want to look fashionable, and their ideas of what is considered fashionable usually come from a combination of their celebrity influences and the unique Chicago lifestyle. Chicagoans dress in a way that allows them to go to a concert at Millenium Park and then walk through the Art Institute. They dress in a way that allows them to be comfortable on the CTA or Metra in the morning and still be able to attend their work meeting downtown. However, they don’t want their fashion dreams to hinder them from being able to go about their day not only looking great but feeling great too. Bustle wrote an article on comfort and fashion and spoke to New York City personal stylist and image expert Alexandra Suzanne Greenawalt. According to Greenawalt, the top thing she hears when working with clients is that they just want to be comfortable. Greenawalt says, “We all want to be comfortable, to move, stretch, and possibly feel as if we could dance in our outfits, and this is where so many fashion companies seem to be missing the mark on what women want”. Although Greenawalt believes fashion companies need to be doing more in bridging the gap between comfort and fashion most Chicagoans seem to be able to find the balance between comfort and their personal style preferences easily.
Here are five Chicagoans on their outfit choice of the day:
What inspired your look today?
“Well I just wanted to be comfortable so I went with the high waisted jeans from Forever 21, the shirt it’s from here (Old Navy) and also the very light jacket because it’s kind of cold outside. I wore flats because I’m comfortable in them.”
What is your Chicago Summer Fashion Staple?
“A romper, I’m more comfortable in a romper and also I like it for this type of weather maybe with like a denim jacket or this linen jacket that I have on.”
“I usually buy my clothes from Fubu’s, so I usually just shop around and I’ll be like Oh I like that and I can match it with this other bottom or sometimes a dress with some heels or flats, or just anything comfortable.”
What made you choose this look today?
“I focus more on comfort. I went with jeans because they’re fitted and other materials might be too loose. I also prefer jeans over leggings.”
If you had to pick a Chicago Summer Fashion Staple, what would it be?
“I like to wear a lot of clothes with a maroon color. I also prefer mid-rise jeans, because they’re more comfortable.”
Why are you sporting this look today?
“Fitness. The pants are actually from this Youtuber Christian Guzman. He’s a fitness Youtuber and this is his brand alphalete. He inspires me a lot and comfort is definitely important to me.”
What is your Unique Chicago Summer Fashion Staple?
“I normally shop at Pacsun because they have the stretchy jeans and if you wear jeans from like H&M or something I feel like they’re very tight and they don’t move freely, but PacSun jeans you can move freely.”
“Instagram people influence my style choices. I just follow a bunch of fashion pages. Fashion is important to me because if you look good, you feel good.”
How is your look today different than others?
“It’s my birthday so my birthday inspired my look for today.
What’s your go-to Chicago Summer Fashion Staple?
“I usually go for jeans a nice pair of shoes and a shirt. I like ripped jeans that are about mid-rise. I like casual tops that you can spice up.”
“Also, Rihanna inspired me to be interested in my fashion choices because she goes with her own style, she doesn’t follow everybody else.”
Are there any unique factors in what you’re wearing today?
“I realized it was kinda cold outside and there was a breeze so I aimed for a flannel and I like ripped jeans.”
Do you have a Chicago Summer Fashion staple?
“High waisted jeans. Ripped and light washed.”
“My fashion inspiration is Kendall Jenner, so she influences my fashion choices.”
Fashion is a big part of people’s lives, especially Chicagoans. Regardless of whether their interest in fashion, and finding what looks good on them was inspired by a celebrity or their own journey of wanting to feel as good as they look, their styles choices are all unique. They use their style as one of the many ways to express themselves, and that’s what makes fashion a truly powerful tool.
