Chicago Meet, Phil Wingo Founder and CEO of Sandhill Coffee
Phil Wingo is the founder and owner of Lisle-based Sandhill Coffee. A environmentally-focused entrepreneur, Phil has set out to change the way we harvest, buy and consume this beloved beverage.
Phil founded Sandhill Coffee after finding inspiration in the unlikeliest of places – the hospital where his son was born. On one of his daily morning runs to the hospital cafe, he realized that coffee was not only how he and many others started their day, but how people made connections with one another and built relationships. After researching the industry and different approaches to the craft of coffee roasting, Phil left his professional career in the pharmaceutical industry and decided to take the leap and create his own roasting business.
“To this day, nothing energizes me more than enjoying the company of family and good friends in the great outdoors,” he says. “For so long, I wished that I could bottle that feeling and share it with the world. That is where coffee came into play. Both nature and coffee bring people together.”
Every aspect of Sandhill Coffee’s business operations has a strong environmental focus. The company’s signature Sandhill Crane-stamped coffee bags are made from a plant derived material and are compostable, as are the cups Phil uses to serve brewed coffee at farmers markets and in local businesses. Phil also does extensive research into the farms that he purchases beans from to see what they are doing to be sustainable and environmentally conscience.
In addition to serving up delicious cups of ethically-sourced coffee, Sandhill is part of a nation-wide organization called 1% For The Planet. This organization is a network of businesses, individual members and non-profits who are pledging to take care of the environment. Through being a part of this organization, Sandhill Coffee donates 1% of its yearly revenue to an environmental nonprofit.
