My name is Matina Koronakos and I was born and raised in Chicago, Belmont-Cragin area. I have been doing hair for about 20 years. My parents are immigrants from Greece and have always taught my sister and I that a strong work ethic and determination will take you anywhere. Hair was my passion from a little girl and I always did hair on my family and friends, especially my sister. Although my sister was the oldest she let me do her hair, she was always very supportive along with my parents. I went to beauty school straight after high school. Upon finishing beauty school I went to work for a large corporate salon in the city and before I knew it 10 years went by. Although I loved my clients, co-workers and craft I felt I was being held back as an artist in this corporate world so one day I quit and never looked back.
For 2 years I was a freelance stylist. During my 2 years of freelancing I started doing hair colors as well, something I was not allowed to do at the corporate salon because we were departmentalized. That is when I knew I had to open my own space where I can allow and encourage other artists and myself artistic freedom. Two years later my dream came to life with Kovo Salon. I found a space in Lincoln Park where our mission is to inspire each person who enters to walk out feeling and looking there best. We have been doing our best work here in Lincoln Park for almost 7 years. The most important thing and what I love in this industry is we never stop learning and with our passion and artistic freedom we make real relationships with our guests and seeing them looking and feeling beautiful, well, there is no greater feeling than that. Without my amazing clientele I would not be where I am today!
The last few months during the pandemic have been stressful to say the least. I was worried every day about my business but I never gave up and although there have been ups and downs with the new regulations, staff and a new normal to get used to we have made it. I am so happy to be open again and working behind the chair, seeing all my clients again has been wonderful. I am so grateful for the tremendous support I received from my clients during the shutdown and since we opened! It gives me hope and confirms I am where I am supposed to be doing what I love with people I love!
My work has been featured in “Today Chicago Women”, Kenmores “So You Want to be a Designer” reality show, Aveda’s Green Science photoshoot, The Luxury Bridal Expo and many local fashion shows throughout Chicago. I have been featured in Modern Bride Magazine with Kovo Salon and we were nominated in Lincoln Park’s Best Of awards for professional services.
