This year marked a momentous occasion for the iconic barber shop The Chicago Buzz, as the team celebrates 20 years of success and collaboration with the community. Located in the Loop, 2 blocks from the famed Willis Tower, The Chicago Buzz is a community centric fixture offering a traditional barber shop experience with a modernized twist.
Planning on staying in the loop indefinitely, Bucktown native and owner Laura Campillo shares her gratitude with her loyal Chicago client base stating, “I love what I do. The craft, the skill, and my amazing family of clients.” Believing the secret to her success has been her dedication to creating a unique salon culture, Campillo’s vision and the undying belief in her goals has kept The Chicago Buzz a fast growing influencer in the loop.
Like many small business owners before her, being an entrepreneur was not her first plan. Campillo had never went to college for business and was fearful about the entrepreneurship process. After working as a lead stylist at the salon, Campillo saw the opportunity to step into the role of owner and jumped in head first despite many personal challenges. “It’s so important to let go of your fears,” Campillo explains. “I didn’t go to college which made me fearful. The idea of running a business intimidated me, but I could feel it in my gut that I was going to be successful. Once I purchased the salon failure was not an option. I am going to do it I thought, I am going to make it work one client at a time.”
A multi-passionate mompreneur, Campillo is grateful for the success she has achieved. Campillo was raised in Bucktown Chicago, one of 6 kids in her family. “I grew up very poor, and that molded who I am today” she explains. “Growing up in my circumstances and that neighborhood, having never lived anywhere else, has made me strong and proud of being a Chicagoan. I can not imagine living or working anywhere else.”
In Campillo’s book, attitude and mindset go a long way. At the time when she acquired The Chicago Buzz she could have chosen to stop many times. Acquiring The Chicago Buzz was delayed many times as Campillo suffered the loss of both parents during that time. A serial optimist however, she knew that if she didn’t try now there may never be another opportunity. She attended the closing of her new business while seven months pregnant. What got her through the many challenges of start-up was knowing she was providing something special for her children. “Everything I do is for them,” Campillo proudly gushes. “My biggest accomplishment will always be being a Mom to my two sons.”
