Evanston Live TV (ELTV Enterprises LLC) is the intersection for the community! Meleika Gardner, creator of the online network, recognized the need for something new, fresh, and a platform that would bring people who would not normally sit at a table together to now learn something about one another. Upon returning back home in 2013 to Evanston, Illinois from Los Angeles, California where Meleika worked for a jazz music label in Beverly Hills and also as a freelance Casting Director, she broadened her entertainment background and began writing for the Guardian LV and I On The Scene before launching her own news and entertainment blog called The Leik.Catching the attention of the community in Evanston, The Leik soon developed into a podcast called The 30+ WTF Show, featuring community leaders and tackling the issues and concerns of those over the age of 35. The warm reception from the community tuning into the live podcast every Monday night birthed the vision to take the podcast to a new level. Having a strong desire to serve the community she grew up in, Evanston Live TV was launched in September of 2016 with the mission to shine a spotlight on the people of the Evanston community. Covering the Evanston mayoral and aldermanic election where candidates rode along in a car with Meleika or personally invited her into their home, Evanston Live TV was able to provide a more indepth look into each candidate’s character with an unconventional style of interviewing. Later adding segments that dive into the real estate industry, health & wellness, entrepreneurship, and broadcasting live streaming of local events, the feedback from the community revealed there had definitely been a thirst for a media outlet like Evanston Live TV. Listening to the voice of the community, Meleika continues to give the people what they want and much more with ELTV Enterprises LLC that will expand across the North Shore and the city of Chicago.
When asked about the staying power of the ELTV Enterprises LLC, Meleika’s response is,” With human beings as our inventory, we will always have intriguing and endless content for our viewers.” Everyone has a voice and ELTV Enterprises LLC is here to inspire everyone to be heard.
Her platform Evanston Live TV opened the doors to an opportunity to get involved in legislation. Because of her community platform Evanston Live TV, Meleika was asked to join the Board of We Will Women that assists women and children in taking action on the legislative level. After losing her father, a stepfather, her nephew, and several friends to gun violence due to systemic racism, the first issue Meleika decided to tackle was Black History expansion. She wrote an Amendment to House Representative LaShawn Ford’s Bill HB4954 that would make it a state law that the true history of Black people (pre-enslavement) must be taught in the Illinois school system K-12. Meleika says Black history does not begin with slavery. Black people built civilizations, kingdoms, contributed medicine, literature, and architecture to the world before they were enslaved. Passing Bill HB4954 will build self worth, self knowledge, and race identity in our Black children and develop healthy race relations with children of all cultural backgrounds once they learn who Black people are in American and World history. Meleika’s mission is to take the text books out of the state of Texas and put a stop to the state of Illinois mis-educating our youth. She believes this is the root to systemic racism.
House Representative Ford and Meleika went before the House Committee on March 4, 2020 in Springfield, IL. Meleika testified in the hearing. HB4954 received 14 votes in favor and 7 votes opposing. The Bill is up for a second vote from Illinois House Representatives in November 2020. Meleika organized a press conference on June 25, 2020 to gain awareness that this Bill is on the table and the start of one solution to end a deadly illness racism.
