Twenty years of taking pictures of Chicago has turned Barry Butler into one of Chicago’s most revered and sought-after photographers. Barry Butler “Chicago’s Own” has taken photos all over the world, from Ireland to Wyoming to China and Africa, yet he keeps returning home, knowing it is the Second City which best brings out his creative genius.
Butler’s love of the Windy City translates through his images, and purchasers of his works see the intrinsic beauty of the rough-and-tumble metropolis, with its iconic skyline, gritty neighborhoods and stunning natural scenery.
Butler was born in Wexford Ireland, but raised mostly in Chicago. He attended Notre Dame College Prep and Columbia College Chicago, where he graduated and went on to become a traffic reporter and sales executive. The view from his 94th floor office of the Hancock Building was inspirational, and so his burgeoning photography career began as a part-time amateur shooter.
You can find his work on television, in books, advertising and music album covers. Two of Barry’s photos were recognized by the Thrillist’s as Top Chicago Photos of 2016 and Huffington Post’s “Top 50 Photos” in Chicago for 2013.
