About Apna Ghar, Inc. (Our Home)
Apna Ghar provides holistic services and conducts outreach and advocacy across immigrant communities to end gender violence. We aim to help survivors achieve safety, stability and self-sufficiency, and to provide community education and advocacy in an effort to positively impact systems and improve overall conditions for the survivors we serve.
Apna Ghar was founded by five pioneering women committed to helping Asian and other under-served immigrant survivors of gender violence and trauma access the services and resources they needed to live lives free from violence. In the mid to late 1980s, hotline calls revealed a high incidence of domestic violence, abandonment, sexual assault and harassment among the growing populations of immigrants and refugees settling in the metropolitan Chicago area. They also found that immigrant survivors were reluctant to seek assistance because of linguistic, cultural and especially legal barriers. Thus, Apna Ghar grew from a volunteer run crisis line, to an incorporated organization in December, 1989 with an emergency shelter with case management, legal advocacy, counseling and other wrap around services to help immigrant and refugee survivors reclaim and rebuild their lives.
Since 1990, Apna Ghar has grown in size and in scope and has developed responsive programming to address the needs of Chicago’s growing immigrant populations, providing multilingual, culturally appropriate programs and services for survivors of gender violence from over 50 different countries. Apna Ghar’s current services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter or safe home, transitional housing, individual and group counseling, case management, legal advocacy, including a volunteer attorney run family law clinic in partnership with the Chicago Volunteer Legal Service (CVLS), a supervised visitation and safe exchange program that includes a court liaison, as well as community education, outreach and training as well as institutional and policy advocacy.
In 2017, we expanded our housing services by doubling our capacity to provide emergency housing through a new purpose built safe home that we constructed, and by restarting our transitional housing program as a result of new funding that we recently received from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) in partnership with WINGS program. In July 2017, we opened a satellite office in Skokie, Illinois and we have been providing counseling, legal advocacy, case management and supervised visitation services to those in need in the north and northwest suburbs. This year we also developed a model for enhanced supervised visitation and safe exchange services in partnership with Inspire Action for Social Change and have been implementing it in our Chicago and Skokie locations. Apna Ghar now also partners with Swedish Covenant hospital to provide services to patients experiencing gender violence and training to staff in assisting these survivors. With this addition, Apna Ghar now operates out of 5 locations.
