Apolis Greek Street Food: The Place to Be For Fresh, Homemade, Authentic Greek Street Food!
A majority of the time when I try a new restaurant, I find that it’s because a friend, co-worker, or family member recommended it to me. This upcoming May, I’ll be graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in Communication, but before I graduate- I have to create a video production on something that I’m passionate about. That one thing, is food! I’ve decided to create a video about food helping us come together and creating good conversation, while also showing how food is educational and can teach us about a different culture. A classmate of mine who is Greek told me I needed to try this place, so I invited her to come with me and have some Greek food. As a Foodie, it’s known that I will travel anywhere for good food. I traveled a good hour to Lisle, IL, and it was well worth it.
Upon getting there at 11:00 am, no more than 15 minutes later, there was a line out the door. That is always a good sign, so I knew the food would be well worth it. Having been there for the first time, the employees were so kind to educate me on the different foods offered. My friend and I met the owner Mike G. and I told him about my project, and he couldn’t have been more welcoming and open to the idea. That day, we feasted on some of the best “Yeeros,” not “Gyros,” I’ve ever tried. They had 4 different types of Yeeros: Pork, Spicy Pork, Beef and Lamb, or Chicken. Of course you can order the traditional yeero on pita or order a rice or salad bowl and add all the toppings you would like, but there are more options to choose from. One of the menu items I’ve never heard of before is called, “Skepasti” which is a Greek Style Quesadilla. You pick whatever yeeros you want and they melt mozzarella, feta, bell peppers, tomatoes, and Athenian sauce between two Greek Pitas. It is cut into 4 triangles and served with whatever sauce you like. It is best served with their Greek style fries which include: Fresh cut fries, lemon, greek herbs, and feta. At this point, I was blown away by how juicy and flavorful the yeero was. One item on their menu that will completely blow you away by the size and taste, is their Zeus burger. This burger is one of the biggest burgers you’ll ever see in your life. You have the option to pick 2 ground beef/lamb patties, or 2 ground chicken patties. They top it off with Athenian sauce, mozzarella, bell pepper, tomato, lettuce, and feta. That’s not it, folks! On top of all of that, they put a generous amount of yeero on top. My first impression was, this is a burger people have to share because it’s HUMONGOUS! Many of the reviews say that this burger could feed up to 4 people, it’s that big! They do have other essential greek like their dips: Hummus, spicy feta dip, taramosalata( Cured fish roe with olive oil and lemon juice), tzatziki, Spanikopita ( Spinach pie), Souvlaki, vegetarian options, and plenty of desserts. The menu is very generous and offers so much more than what I listed.
Besides having really delicious, affordable, fresh, and homemade food- The customer service was some of the best I’ve ever received anywhere! They answer all your questions, and give you generous sized portions. You will not leave this place hungry. In fact, many of the people that joined me, ended up taking a box to go because it’s so much food. The owner Mike G. and all the employees really put all their love and pride into their food and it shows. In the middle of April, I’ll be releasing my food documentary and you will see first hand how the food at Apolis is made and how well it is put together! A big thank you to Mike G. for allowing me to film there and write about his wonderful restaurant. Please go check them out. You won’t be disappointed. They’re located at 1109 Maple Ave, Lisle, IL 60532. They’re open Monday- Saturday 11:00 am-9:00 pm, and Sundays 11:00-8:00 pm. Be ready to run into a huge lunch-time crowd as soon as they open!
