These movies are all set in Chicago and they have become popular throughout the years given their iconic portrayals of the city.
1. The Blues Brothers, 1980
Brothers Jake and Elwood Blues seek redemption from their past by getting their band back together and raising money for their home orphanage. With lively songs, charismatic characters and a final chase scene with more car crashes than in the Dark Knight this movie shows several aspects for the whole family to enjoy. Iconic landmarks and places can be seen throughout the film such as the James Brown church where the Blues brothers figured out their plan, Jackson Park where Illinois Nazis were made to jump to the river and the Richard J. Daley Plaza, City Hall where the climax of the story took place.
2. The Sting, 1973
Two con-artists seek to get even with a mob boss after their friend is murdered, and they seek to pull the ultimate “sting” in Chicago during the height of the Great Depression. This film keeps the audience and the characters on its toes with everyone having their own agenda and double crosses coming from both sides. Inspired by the lives of the real-life grifter brothers Fred and Charley Godroff, the film won seven Oscars by its vivid and detailed depiction of Chicago during the Great Depression and showed just how daring and grey the mob’s world truly is.
3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 1986
Has a High School senior ever wanted to take a day off? Well Ferris Bueller chooses to have just that as he ditches school to go into downtown Chicago with his girl and his best friend take in with a little sightseeing, experience the freedom and all aspects a 17 year-old can have. A trip on a red Ferrari through downtown Chicago is a good way to spend the day. Places and parts of Chicago are highlighted such as the Skydeck in Willis Tower and Wrigley Field.
4. Baby’s Day Off, 1994
Being the son of a wealthy family has its ups and downs, like when three bumbling criminals try to kidnap you for the reward money when you decide to go for a stroll through the city. Follow along as the wacky chase around the city takes the audience through different parts of Chicago. This film is a very fun classic for the whole family that is bound to get people to laugh as the story goes.
5. Office Christmas Party, 2016
When the CEO of a company decides to shut down her party loving brother’s branch, he and his fired employees decide to throw the biggest Christmas office party to land a VIP and save their jobs. With nothing other than alcohol and bad decisions the night spirals out of control in this raunchy seasons comedy. Taking place during the jolliest time of the year it’s the only film on the list that shows Chicago’s Christmas spirit and the fun side of the office. Taking place mostly in the downtown area this shows how the big buildings are all covered with snow and cheer.
